WFP reports that food and nutrition distributions for over 220,000 people have started in Tawila, North Darfur – where hundreds of thousands are seeking refuge from horrific violence in and around El Fasher and Zamzam IDP Camp. The upcoming rainy season and funding shortfalls could threaten recent progress in turning the tide of famine – at a time when WFP urgently needs to be scaling up to pre-stock food before roads become flooded and impassable, and ahead of the lean season when hunger is expected to surge.

Today, WFP delivered the last remaining food stocks to hot meals kitchens it supports in the Gaza Strip. These kitchens will run out of ingredients by the end of the month. No humanitarian or commercial supplies have entered Gaza for more than seven weeks as all main border crossing points remain closed. This is the longest closure the Gaza Strip has ever faced, exacerbating already fragile markets and food systems.

WFP is urgently calling for unimpeded access to immediately preposition food assistance across key locations in Sudan, as deliberate obstruction by parties on the ground and the approaching rainy season threaten to render vast areas of the country inaccessible by road. Without swift action, WFP warns that millions of vulnerable people could be cut off from life-saving aid, placing fragile humanitarian gains at serious risk.

Within 48 hours of the powerful earthquake that struck central Myanmar on the 28th of April, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) began emergency food distributions to affected communities. WFP has so far reached 15,000 earthquake survivors in four impacted states and is scaling up efforts to assist 850,000 affected people.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has rapidly mobilized additional assistance in Burundi to support the large influx of families fleeing violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) which has placed a significant strain on WFP food assistance.

WFP is increasingly concerned about growing food insecurity in the West Bank, where tens of thousands of people in the West Bank have been displaced since mid-January, and military activity and movement restrictions are disrupting markets and limiting access to food.

WFP has reached one million people with food parcels, hot meals, fresh bread and cash assistance, distributing food in North Gaza, which had been cut off for 80 days between October and December 2024. The 25 bakeries now operational in the north, middle and south areas are producing more than 150,000 bread bundles a day.

More than two weeks into the ceasefire, WFP has scaled up to support Palestinians with life-saving food assistance. WFP is providing almost full rations and hot meals to those most in need. It is also restocking bakeries and providing cash to help them start rebuilding their lives and to reviving local economy.

Concerns are mounting as violence escalates rapidly in and around Goma, the provincial capital of eastern DRC. In a city of one million plus people, food and water supplies are running low – the next 24 hours are crucial. Several WFP warehouses have been looted; teams are taking stock of what we will need to locally procure and transfer by road to make sure we have provisions once we resume operations in the critically affected areas.

WFP brought 10,130 tonnes of food into Gaza in the last week – more in the first eight days of the ceasefire than in the previous month. Food entered Gaza through all available border crossings from Jordan, Israel and Egypt without incident. WFP aims to reach one million people each month for the next three months.

The first WFP trucks have started crossing from Egypt into Gaza. WFP aims to get at least 150 trucks into Gaza on a daily basis if conditions allow, to provide immediate food aid such as wheat flour and ready-to-eat meals and also to support local food production, re-stock bakeries, and provide nutrition supplements for thousands of children.

WFP is calling for immediate steps to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance, safe and sustained access, and restoration of law and order. A ceasefire in Gaza is long overdue. Life is on pause for over two million people without access to proper food, water, shelter, and education. Despite continuous humanitarian efforts to deliver life-saving aid, it is impossible to meet people’s needs in the current scenario of conflict, insecurity, and restrictions.

WFP is scaling-up its operations in Haiti to meet escalating food needs in the face of a hunger crisis driven primarily by violence and displacement.
More than 50,000 Haitians have been displaced in the past two weeks alone due to insecurity related to armed groups, while across the country, 5.4 million people are facing acute hunger – one of the highest per capita proportions of food insecurity worldwide.

The humanitarian response in Gaza is nearing collapse as the threat of famine gets closer. The breakdown of law and order and disregard for international humanitarian principles are placing humanitarian staff, operations and the people of Gaza at increasing risk. WFP and partner humanitarian agencies need solutions that address the breakdown of law and order, and for all parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law to allow for the safe passage of aid.

Three convoys are heading to critical hunger hotspots – famine-hit Zamzam camp (North Darfur) and Kadugli (South Kordofan). These shipments mark the beginning of what is expected to be the largest food aid operation since start of the conflict.

The risk of famine will persist throughout Gaza this winter unless fighting stops and more humanitarian aid reaches families, according to a new food security assessment by experts from 16 UN agencies and NGOs. Twelve months of fighting have decimated livelihoods, drastically reduced food production and severely restricted both commercial and humanitarian supply lines, the report said.

Escalating violence has led to mass displacements within Lebanon, requiring WFP to scale up its emergency food assistance to reach up to one million

The limited flow of humanitarian assistance and the breakdown of law and order is pushing Southern Gaza towards the same extreme hunger that was seen before in the north as the military incursion into Rafah is having a devastating impact.
